Assessment of Radiation Damage to Normal Cognitive Function

It is well known that radiation can damage the normal brain tissues and lead to impaired cognitive function, e.g. damage to the hippocampus will lead to loss of memory. There has been a great research interest to optimize the radiation dose map for each patient to achieve maximum therapeutic effect while sparing brain functions. We are studying the impact of radiation to hippocampus and correlate the results with patients memory assessed in longitudinal follow-up visits. The sub-cortical structures are segmented using FSL and overlaid onto the radiation dose map to calculate the radiation received in each side of hippocampus.
